I drove out to Bruneau Dunes State Park on Saturday to catch the last day of the Boise Astronomical Society’s Messier Marathon. Unfortunately, it was very windy all day and the sky clouded over in the late afternoon. I was planning on camping but I didn’t have any tent pegs so I packed it up and drove back home. I will be back to volunteer at the observatory seen here. The Boise Astronomical Society has cut a deal with the observatory and the state park. In exchange for two hundred volunteer hours, the state does not charge the society for taking over the campgrounds for the Idaho Star Party that is coming up in September. Apparently, there is a 25-inch telescope in this building that the public is allowed, even encouraged to look through. 25 inches is enough to see Pluto, the only “planet” I have yet to see. I tracked all the others down with 7x50 binoculars.
