Today 9th July 2011, HMS Sutherland Replenished at Sea (RAS) with RFA Fort Victoria. Photo's were taking from HMS Sutherlands Lynx aircraft 'Sabre', which was piloted by LT Brett Gillies with flight observer LT Sally Lawrence-Archer in the left hand seat.
HMS Sutherland is currently deployed with the lead element of the Cougar 11 deployment as part of the Royal Navy’s Response Force Task Group (RFTG). The RFTG is to take part in multi-national exercises in the Mediterranean before moving East through the Suez Canal for further exercises in the Indian Ocean.
The RFTG is a new initiative announced in last years Strategic Defence and Security Review and is at the heart of the UK’s maritime contingent capability, held at very high readiness to respond to unexpected global events. Leaving the UK in April the Task Group plans to be away for up to 6 months and is commanded from the Fleet Flagship HMS Albion, by Commodore John Kingwell Royal Navy, Commander United Kingdom Task Group (COMUKTG).
