Devizes, Wiltshire. 22nd April 2015. Volunteers are watched by nesting swans as they begin the long task of repainting the 16 canal locks that lead up the steep hillside into Devizes town.
The protected swans have chosen to nest next to lock number 41 where a group of volunteers for the Canal and Rivers Trust are painting the faded iron work on the historic locks. The sleeping swan does not seem too concerned with its new found company whilst the male keeps a watchful eye from a safe distance. This section of the Kennet and Avon canal forms part of the 29 locks in total that take hundreds of canal boats every year. The warm spring weather has brought many public to the working historic attraction and has provided perfect conditions for the volunteers to perform the necessary work.WayneFarrell, from
