and the Oscar goes too
Set in the heart of Ballsbridge
Oscar started life as Ritz cinema in 1929 know affectionately to generations of locals as
the Shack. With a name change in the early seventies the Oscar continued its run of success,
but as is the case with a small suburban cinema, not having access to new releases
that the larger city centre cinema's had, caused closure for a while.
Various actors bought the property in 1976 and reopened the following year as Oscar Theatre, original works, the classics and musicals were staged, with the economy on the downturn the theatre folded less than ten years later.
Bought by the Sikh community in 1986 the old cinema/theatre is now a temple.
The wheelchair ramp to the right was built initailly for Christy Brown.
