Tierra del Fuego, Chile

It almost doesn’t look real, a tree being upright yet so horizontal. It seemed like one of those trees from a Dr. Seuss book, so familiar as a kid, yet foreign when you see it in person. This tree and its shape is a famous icon of Patagonia, such that a Chilean beer maker, Cerveza Austral, has a similar tree on the label of its dark lager. The winds on Tierra del Fuego are some of the windiest I have ever experienced in my life, even windier than some we faced on mountains in and on Cerro Fitzroy. Not only was it fast (60-80mph), it was constant, non-stop blustering cold wind, hitting every part of your body, chilling you to the bone and knocking you on your butt if you weren’t careful. I now know why trees grow like this here. At a certain point, you give up and just “go with the wind” right?
