The annual Christmas reindeer visit has been cancelled due to bluetongue travelling restrictions.
Town centre manager Chris Richards said an artificial ice rink could replace the main pre-Christmas celebration if availability and sponsorship allow.
The Cairngorm Reindeer Company announced it would not be able to travel to Eastbourne due to the bluetongue exclusion zone, which runs across the country from Lincolnshire to Hampshire.
Once cloven-footed animals have entered this zone, they may not leave.
Mr Richards said, "I am aware that this will leave us without a Christmas event this year and I will be looking to see if we can replace this given that we have a very limited budget. The reindeer were the event for this year.
"They are always very popular and always attract a very large crowd to the town.
"We are looking at possibly getting an artificial ice rink but it's a case of availability, funding the location and finding a sponsor.
"If we have not found something by mid November, then I would suspect there would be no event this year."
