Remnants of a row of artillery positions atop the walls of Fort Monroe.

DailyPhoto for Tuesday, February 5, 2013

The building with the white columns at the extreme left served as the quarters of Robert E. Lee when he was stationed at Fort Monroe as Lieutenant of Engineers in 1831-1834. He had almost complete control of construction and put the finishing touches on the Fort. His first child was born at Fort Monroe in 1832.

Lee, of course, would go on to become the commanding general for the South during the American Civil War.

And ironically, after the defeat of the South, Fort Monroe, the fort that Lee himself had helped build, would serve as the place of imprisonment for Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy.

The actual casemate or room within the walls of the Fort where Jefferson Davis was held prisoner can be seen here: http://www.bayislandphotography.com/Photography/Other-Versions/15989682_8N4DB2#!i=2351778489&k=gkQPS2s
