Night is associated with positive and negative attributes. Whereas one region may believe in danger, death, and fear, another does in serenity, journey, and meditation. Until the Industrial Revolution (1750 - 1850), most work was performed in the day with few professions lit by torch, full moonlight, and the Night Beacon.Today, humanity depends less on the Sun and global society operates at all hours of the day. Its length varies across the Earth and times of year, from non-existence in October-March at the South Pole, to the average of one's daily life, to nearly 65 days long in Barrow, Alaska. Night, on other planets, varies from Earth’s—Venusian nights last 60 Earthdays due to the planet's slower axial rotation. And in fiction, night may last forever.
