One of the first cast iron lighthouses in the south, It survived Hurricanes Camille and Katrina both destroying much of the coast. The light was civilian operated until 1939 with several female lightkeepers. In 1939, the U. S. Coastguard assumed the operation of the light. Today it is open for tours.
