Thousands of residents streamed back to Jefferson Parish starting at dawn on Monday morning, September 5, 2005 to encounter a range of property losses. Some found flooded and looted properties and businesses, some encountered total loss, other were pleasantly surprised at how well their properties weathered Hurricane Katrina. Cars were backed up for miles leading into Jefferson Parish on Airline Highway. Many of the vehicles were driven by passengers who slept in their cars overnight to secure a spot in line. People were required to show proof of residence in order to pass police check points. Boston Globe Photo - reproduction requires explicit written permission from the Boston Globe.
