"BIG EDGE" by Nancy Rubins (2009)
“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” ~ Confucius
"Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream." ~ a nursery rhyme and popular children's song
Of course, I love the wild bouquet of color and shapes juxtaposed against surrounding monochromatic glass buildings. With over 200 recycled and reused aluminum boats, canoes, rowboats, and flat-bottomed boats — carefully sculpted together, Nancy Rubins’ monumental "Big Edge" creates the perfect centerpiece for City Center's Roundabout. Attached to an armature and to one another, the boats shoot upward and outward and are supported by cantilevers. It looks as if they were tossed into the air and captured in a freeze frame. Rubins, a sculptor and artisan famous for grandiose works created from salvaged, industrial consumer goods, was selected for the collection based on her ability to achieve this scale of work with such grandeur. It was delivered as individual boats & canoes before being assembled on site.
Hang in there; tomorrow is Friday!
