Venice, one of the most beautiful cities I have visited, filled with magnificent compositions and many things to be photographed. Being there only for a day was difficult to capture all I wanted and all I’ve seen but I managed to capture some of my favorite spots. This composition was sth that caught my eye when I was trying to take some shots of the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs). While waiting for the perfect light I managed to try multiple angles of this shot, and ended up trying also different techniques. I did use a filter to create this one that allowed me to go with a longer exposure and remove any movement on the water. Specifically I did use a 10 stop ND filter that enable me to go up to 3 minutes exposure in bright daylight
Even though I firstly intended and edited it in color, I later on saw that I liked the feel and depth of the same image in black and white more, it was somehow more powerful (At least that’s how it looked to me). I did convert the raw file into BW in Lightroom, and later I did blend 3 images of different exposure into one to end up with one single base exposure, all this done with the help of photoshop. With various techniques like Exposure masking I did also correct some basic mistakes into the exposure that I created from the three files. I also used Viveza and Color Effex Pro to enhance the clarity of the clouds, and excessive sharpening to bring out some of the details in the image.
One of the most frequent problem that occurs on black and white long exposure is Banding, what is that you may ask?
Banding appears when the gradient of the two colors mix, and it looks like lines when you zoom in the image, an especially when there is no noise at all in that part of the image. Dealing with that is quite tedious and frustrating but luckily with the help of Topaz denoize I was able to remove the banding and also the noise in different parts of the image, One of the best software’s to remove noise in an image and also the Banding
