During breeding season, the tricolored herons bill changes from the normal yellow with some black, to a bright blue with black on the end. The legs and feet change from a greenish yellow to a deep pink. They grow white plumes on the back of their head. They grow long bluish purple plumes from their back and their neck feathers get longer and turn more purple. The lores change from a grayish yellow to blue and the skin above the eye changes from yellow to blue.
