An example of the small, low-growing mammillaria-type cactus with a tiny red fruit still on it. Each stem was on the order of 1.5-2 inches in diameter, so the fruit was, at a guess, no more than 1/4 inch across.

If one looked carefully, there were a few other kinds of cactus growing in the yard besides saguaro, cholla, ocotillo, prickly pear, and the large fishhook barrel cactus. One was a small cactus that grew in clusters. It resembled a Mammillaria, and was covered in a network of intersecting fine needles, and further protected by projecting longer, thicker fishhook shaped spines. Occasionally a few tiny cherry red fruits would be visible.
