HAWKSBILL TURTLE | Mabul Island, Borneo (Malaysia)

Underwater photography is a whole new beast. More money – SLR housing can cost upwards of $3,000! More skills – less light means less color, and you can’t just add it in photoshop. Oh, and then you have to get to you destination and dive. It’s a blast, but be ready to shell out some cash. You can rent an underwater camera (I used a Sony DSC-TX10 to take this photo) on Mabul at one of the dive shops for about $30 per day. Don’t think you’ll find a pro-level SLR for rent though. Lack of a decent flash and low ISO on cheaper cameras are a problem too. Not to mention you are trying to learn how to use a new camera and dive all at once. And then the battery dies once you get going.

That said, looking into the eyes of a sea turtle swimming freely in the wild is unforgettable. They are some of the most graceful sea creatures around. If Buddha came from the ocean, he surely would have been a Hawksbill turtle.
