Steptoe Ridge, Palouse
5/22/13 - Rapeseed fields in the Palouse, Washington. We've spent two days driving around the back roads of the Palouse in Washington. We only saw the rapeseed in this one spot. I was so excited to see it! Our most exciting moments came today when we drove up to Steptoe Butte. I had no idea it was going to be one of those drives with steep drop offs all the way up...for about ten miles. The views were spectacular, but I was freaked out, since I'm terrified of heights. The Palouse is a beautiful farming region in eastern Washington. Again, I'd never heard of it until I saw some gorgeous shots of the area on smugmug and added it to my bucket list. It is an area of rolling hills. Farmers plow and plant following the curves of the hills and it is very striking. The curves capture the light in unique ways. Unfortunately, the light during our two days here wasn't particularly great, but it was lovely, nonetheless. Hopefully, I've gotten some decent shots. Many of the Palouse towns are extremely small and a number of them seem to be dying with almost no businesses still operating. Pullman, Colfax and Palouse are the towns big enough to have at least one place to eat. Pullman is quite large and is the home of Washington State University. If you have a chance to explore this beautiful region, I highly recommend it. Thanks so much for your warm response to my shot of Palouse Falls. Your thoughts really gave me a boost today!
