Sugar Bowls

We had the pleasure of having the first ever free guided tour of all parts of the Theatre Royal on Tuesday. This Waterford Crystal chandelier dates from the 1800's. It is one of three hanging in the Theatre Royal which at 220 years old is the oldest original theatre in Europe. Interesting facts learned on our culture tour these past two days :) Money ran out before the chandeliers were finished so the workers in Waterford Crystal banded together and supplied sugar bowls to finish them. So each candle (now bulb) is sitting in a sugar bowl.

Fine dining in Bishop's Palace

Bishop Charles Este, born in London in 1696, commissioned the renowned architect, Richard Castle, to design and build this building, described as one of the largest and finest episcopal buildings in Ireland. The building work was begun in the early 1740's but when Este died in 1745 the palace was unfinished and his successor, Bishop Chevenix turned to John Roberts to complete the work. http://waterfordireland.tripod.com/bishop's_palace.htm

Free and unrestricted access yesterday as part of the Waterford Festival of Learning

Thank you for the wonderful response to the wrapped tree

Gaelic Harp

Keeping with the Irish themed weekend. This one is made of Waterford Crystal

With a resonating chamber usually carved from a single log – traditionally willow – and strung with wires of brass, silver or perhaps even gold, whose resonating strings were selectively damped, the extraordinary sweetness of this instrument was described in glowing terms by early writers. The best-known surviving example is the instrument on which Ireland's national emblem is based: the medieval harp preserved in the Long Room of Trinity College, Dublin. http://www.irishharp.org/about.htm

Thank you for the great response to Shillelagh

Waterford Crystal

No trip to Waterford would be complete without a visit to Waterford Crystal!
Time

Unique William Maddock Clock.

The works of the clock were designed by William Maddock a prestigious watch and clockmaker in Waterford during 1766 to 1790. It is encased 48 panels with 250 buttons all individually handcrafted in Waterford Crystal. Taken during a tour of the factory in the House of Waterford Crystal. http://www.waterfordvisitorcentre.com/

It has been a busy 10 days. Time to enjoy the Dailies disappeared! Will be in and out of the Dailies over the next few weeks due to a combination of appointments and a few trips (hopefully).

Remembering

In remembrance of all of the people affected by 9/11

Just thought I'd add what I was doing at the time on 9 11 I was waiting with my then 12 year old niece in a hospital as she was getting an x ray. As we moved from department to department we kept getting all kids of bits of information as it was at the time the attacks were happening. It was only when we returned to the car that we got the whole horrific story. I flew to Pensacola for a week the day flight were resumed. It was the day I had been due to fly out there anyway and I was not going to not go. Having grown up in Ireland we believe in going about our lives regardless of attacks.

This tribute is Waterford Crystal
Strawberries Anyone?

That's my sis in the background. She was visiting for a few days. Wish it was mine but it is part of the Waterford Crystal display at the House of Waterford Crystal. http://www.waterfordvisitorcentre.com/Home
