This picture pretty much sums up my impression of the settlement of Umiat: muddy, grey and dull. This old oilfield exploration camp has no permanent residents and is only accessible by air or river. According to Wikipedia, it is also one of the coldest places in the US. Because of the low clouds, it seemed uncertain that our charter was going to be able to come out to pick us up. People have been stuck for days here waiting for the weather to clear up but we were very glad we all got picked up the same day as we arrived to fly back to Bettles and then Prospect Creek.
