Whio. Blue Duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchos (Gmelin, 1789)
I was so fortunate to meet two beautiful Whio while running a Bush programme near the Tongariro River over the weekend. These birds are on the vulnerable national list, Also you will find these birds on your NZ $10.00 notes. The blue duck or whio is an iconic species of clear fast-flowing rivers, now mostly confined to high altitude segments of rivers in North and South Island mountain regions. Nowhere common, it lives at low densities and its shrill “whio” whistle above the noise of turbulent waters will usher in a long-remembered encounter.
