On Saturday, October 20th, 2012 at approximately 3:20PM, a 911 call came in from a bystander that a house had smoke coming from the basement. Public Information Officer, Lt. Jeff Sievers, was on scene. He informed me that one bedroom had extensive damage to it by fire. The first arriving units were able to get a quick knockdown on this fire. He says it took approximately 5 minutes to put out. There were two occupants in the home at the time of the fire. They were on the first floor when their smoke detector sounded and they saw smoke in the house and were able to get out of the home o.k. Lt. Sievers said this fire was unintentional and accidental by leaving a candle burning unattended in the basement. He said the home is not livable because of smoke damage and the occupants had someone they could stay with. This structure fire response to N. Sheridan Avenue, consisted of two engines, two truck companies, one squad unit, one haz mat unit, one AMR Ambulance, and a R.I.C. Team.
