Appoggiatura or a grace note in music adds something dissonant to the melody, yet it contributes to the beauty of the overall composition. The notes are short and not counted in time, often played together or just before the harmonic note next to it. In the literal translation from Italian it means "to lean on." It serves to remind us that the difficulties in life create in us a marvelous and lovely harmony and we shouldn't be looking at the difficult or dissonant times quite so negatively, or concentrate so heavily on them but those are the times we are adding grace notes to our lives, creating and embellishing us to become more beautiful. Appoggiatura. Grace notes. There is no better word for them really. For often it is by grace we move on to be a more harmonious and beautiful self.
