SmugMug > popular > Machines > I am standing alongside a John Deere Model 9600 Hillside Combine which gives a reference to the size of these machines. It harvests a 30 foot cut and contains a customized automatic levelling device that maintains the central body in a level state while harvesting sidehills holding up to a 37 degree slope. This provides the proper threshing and cleaning of the crop while the header conforms to the ground slopes. The central body of the combine including the huge front wheels span 20 feet and with the header on it is 30 feet wide. The combine weighs empty about 34.000 pounds and a full bulk tank holding 300 bushels of wheat adds another 18,000 pounds for a grand total of 51,000 pounds or over 25 tons gross weight! It is powered by a supercharged 330 HP Diesel engine coupled with a hydraulic transmission drive system providing an infinite selection of ground speeds. Note the fully enclosed air-conditioned operator cab. The harvest will usually last about a month. Although wheat is the dominant crop in the area, these combines also harvest dry peas as some of the photos will show.
