SmugMug > popular > Other > March 12, 2008 You Never Know Who is Watching It is officially springtime around here. Yesterday afternoon I saw a cardinal fly out of one of our vines and thought it would be so neat to find a nest and watch for babies. We've enjoyed several generations in the past few years but never have seen them until they ventured down to the feeder. Very carefully I poked my head into the bushes and started looking, trying not to disturb anything I might find. As I leaned back to move to another area, this is what I saw. Not one, but three ribbon snakes, and they were about 18 inches above where my head had been. (I still can't believe that I didn't jump and scream. What WAS I thinking?) They even had the good manners to sit and wait for me to get the camera, switch to the macro lens, and come back outside. I took about a dozen photos with different settings before they decided they'd had enough and slipped away. I'm sure I'll see them again but probably not all at one time like this. If there was a bird nest in this area, I'm afraid the outlook for babies is not so good. Maybe the bird was just resting and will find a better place to raise a family. I certainly hope so.

Mum and I have been admiring this flower Farm 6 mins from home for ages but we NEVER go and photograph it til today OBVIOUSLY Mum let me use her old camera which she said I could buy of her for a ridiculously LOW price considering it is only 16months old BUT she does have a very flash new one ANYWAY so I thought I would try it out today see how I like it before I commit to buying it cos (single Mum you all know whats its like and we all love a rather expensive hobby) although at the same time as expensive as the equiptment is once you have it and if you look after it you really don't need to buy it again except by choice (thats how I justify spending the money anyway LOL) anyway I better not carry on its not safe writting captions when I have brain mush
SmugMug > popular > Other > goldfinch - the state bird of washington, iowa and new jersey 04/25/08 addendum: thank you for your kind comments all. several of them noted the light, pose or getting these quick guys at all. i had the afternoon off so took the bus to the shore even tho it was a very grey day. i saw some wonderful things but it was a little too grey so almost nothing i shot (3 out of 100 even look like anything at all but not too good) turned out. my energy ran out so i went back to just sit and wait for the bus instead of keeping shooting. while i was walking to the stop i passed this tree and there were about 4 goldfinch and 5 house finch bickering and flitting about as they do. they were very leery of me so i had to stay a good 20' away which is max for my meager eqpt and the light still wasn't great especially for small moving targets but i figured i'd just look and delete (the beauty of digital over film for sure). i shot 30+ before the goldfinches appeared to win wahtever the argument was about because the house finches left. this guy hopped up to this lovely vantage to sing his triumph (presumably) and i shot about 6 before he too flitted off. of all those shots this was the only one that turned out but i'm very happy with it. its the first one i've ever caught well which is probably why i'm rattling on so about it. thanks again for you kind comments. i wish you good light and interesting things to shoot in it

I've always wanted to create a composite photo like this one, and finally had the opportunity at a recent senior portrait shoot. She was a great sport about experimenting. We took these at the elementary school that she attended, so it should be special to her. We had been shooting on the playground earlier.
SmugMug > popular > Other > March 29, 2008 Day 8 So today once again I took my daily photo with my 105mm macro lens. Its seriously the funnest lens. I would recommend it to everyone. This is a photo of a water droplet on a CD. I dimmed the lights and it gave me this dramatic effect. As always Comments and Critiques are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stan
