Mud Sale

I live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. One thing we are known for is our large population of "Old Order Amish" people. Yes, these are the folks who avoid the modern conveniences that most of us enjoy. No cars (only horse drawn buggies), no electricity, no telephones, no buttons or zippers in their clothing. We have about 30,000 Amish neighbors in the county.

A friend and I visited a "Mud Sale" today. What is that, you ask? It's a large springtime sale and auction of everything from farm equipment and horses to antiques and quilts. I'll give you a guess why it's calles a Mud Sale (consider the season and probability of certain weather trends).

I would estimate that there were more than a thousand Amish folks at this event. I tried to be discreet as I photographed. Photographs of the Amish are considered "graven images" in their view. Just the same, this was a very public event and including them in some shots seemed appropriate and within the bounds of acceptability.

Here's one shot of an auctioneer selling goods to an interested crowd.

When I do my PS work on these, I'll post a link to the rest. I'm leaving on a business trip tomorrow so it will be a few days from now.

SmugMug > popular > Portfolio > is riley the cutest dog or what? she cracks me up how she gets in between your legs or on your body to get comfy. today in particular she found my bottom to be particularly cushy. i seem to store excess fat from the winter there!
SmugMug > popular > Portfolio > Every summer I spend a lot of time up north in a small community called Bay View. We have a cottage on the water front. This girl, who has been my friend since I was a toddler, owns the cottage next door. This is her and her dog Lucky after we had gone for a polar bear swim. This is a swim down at our dock in the morning that tends to be very chilly. We are sitting on her porch drinking coffee waiting for the world to wake.

Old railroad bridge, Harrisburg, PA

Misty morning after yesterday's rain. Cooler and much more fall-like.

Edit: The Walnut Street Bridge also known as The People's Bridge, is a truss bridge that spans the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Built by the Phoenix Bridge Company in 1890.

The bridge was built to break the toll monopoly enjoyed by the neighboring Camelback Bridge (now the Market Street Bridge). The Walnut Street Bridge was closed to motor vehicles and converted to a pedestrian and bikeway link to City Island after the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood. The eastern span of the bridge is outlined in lights which, along with the City Island facilities, create a dynamic visual effect at night. The 2,801 foot (854 m) span is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. The conversion to pedestrian use gave the bridge a new purpose and it used by over a million visitors, tourists and residents annually. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also recognized as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
