Bluebird boxes are the perfect size for little red squirrels, thus the birds (and flying squirrels I might add )can lose their home. The other night on "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe on the Discovery Channel....Mike went "Worm Grutin'".
I had to smile and post this..... It's all true.
This is the same blog I posted on Day 53, April 25th, but with a different photo.
....Hey, it's a SP too.

When I camped Thursday night, there was a very small town a few miles from the camp. By small I mean a population of 200. No lights, just a four way stop. Its name is Sopchoppy. It has a little IGA store for groceries. Across from the little IGA store was an antique shop called Two Sisters. There was a banner hanging in front that said "Worm Gruntin Festival T-Shirts". So I went across and talked to the two sisters about the festival. They were very friendly and this is what they told me....

Once a year they have a festival celebrating "worm gruntin".
This is what worm gruntin is....The locals go out into the nearby State Park and National Forest and stick a device into the ground. Then they rub or vibrate this "homemade" device. It makes a grunting sound. The worms in the ground think there is a worm eating mole in the area and the worms go to the surface to get away from the mole. Then the Worm Grunters pick them up and a commercial worm company comes around and buys the worms.

When Charles Kuralt was "on the road" a few years ago, he stopped at one of these Worm Gruntin Festivals and interviewed one of the grunters. He said they made a pretty good living doing this. Well....a few weeks later the IRS came to town and was asking a lot of questions. Now....just .a couple of weeks ago, NBC and Katie Couric closed their broadcast with a story about this years festival. When asked if this was their living, they answered ..."they only did it for fun".

lol... what you can learn in a small town.

A stiff southwest wind and its attendant waves broke up the harbor ice and pushed it towards shore. That made this shot easy. How cold was it? So cold that ducks froze to the beach the day before. I was told they were rescued with hot water and a chisel.
