SmugMug > popular today > Day 158 - Mussels by the Pound

Fresh, Hot, Steaming Blue-Shell mussels.

Since we moved to Nova Scotia, we've come to love Blue-Shell mussels. They are in abundance here because they have mussel farms, sort of like raising chickens. We joked and said mussels are like fries - everything comes with a side of mussels.. almost.. :)

We usually get about a pound of mussels, which is about 3 dozen (sometimes for less than a $1 during the right time of season). We used to eat the cherry stone clams in PA, but those clams are hard to come by here. I think PEI has some, but we mostly get the oblong soft shell clams, which taste the same but look a bit different.

We did happen to find a clam thats very close to the smaller clams called Quahogs (Ko-Hog). However, it's much larger and often used for chowders. It must be a larger cousin, because they are the size of softballs and can be used as a brick to do some damage (hehe). You have to be careful not to drop one on your foot or you can be in some serious pain. :)

One time, we got a dozen of them to try. I was amazed at the size and it was almost enough to feed both of us. I think I still can go for a few of them. Nothing like a cold beer and hot steaming clams or mussels.

We also had some scallops tonight.
I live to flambe! Fire Fire hehehe Fire :)

SmugMug > popular today > Post 216 7/25/08 Mom, are you awake????

This is one of my Florida shots taken at the barn we were going to when we had stopped along the way and saw the zebra (just for the sake of some background!) I am just starting to sort through the 2000 or so pictures I took during the 4+ days we were away and it is a slow process...This shot is of a pony still nursing its mother...the light was quite low in the barn and shooting was very unsatisfying. I had thought to trash this shot, but then looking at it again, I think I like it. Sort of difficult angle with seeing the pony's tail-end at the fore. Mom was just resting lying down. After this, the pony did go around and nurse. I had never seen this before, especially with a horse lying down. The shots I have of the momma look like she is not even alive. I think with all that we have going on in the next few weeks it will really take me time to finish the gallery.

I am going to a Dental Hygiene conference in Chicago next Wed through Sunday. Who knows what I will pick up there..

Back to the Daily Photos
I figured I'd take some easy macro shots to get back in the groove. Here's another shot of my jeans that I had to choose from for today's shot.
I've been working my ass off (literally) for the past month. I didn't have the motivation to take any daily photos during my month long job as Stage Supervisor for Opera NJ.

To give you an idea of what I've been doing, imagine 3 opera sets in one theatre at the same time. One of the sets is meant for a much larger stage that what we were on. And of course, it was rare that a set could stay on stage for more than 2 days at a time. There were many days when we had all 3 sets on the stage at some point. My crew of interns and I managed to get through it alive, but we still have a few more days left until we get all the sets packed up and returned. I may miss a few daily photos until I'm officially done, but I'll back, full force, in no time.

The other day,I realized that I've been doing daily photos for over a year now. I took a look at my old 2007 gallery, and was amazed at how much I've grown and learned. I thank all of you on the DP Community for your support, help, and motivation.

Inspired by a recent conversation.

Sorry, I didn't mean for this to be a, "What Is It?" It's a Mont Blanc pen photographed on a sheet of phone bling. That's so far out there that it would have been one lucky guesser to figure it out.
