SmugMug > popular today > January 7, 2010 - "Whitney Lake"

I really remember this hike - it was a difficult 2.3 mile climb up 1,856 ft. to 10,956 ft. - but beautiful once reaching the lake. What I remember was my lesson learned - as we neared the end of the return leg, it started to storm. I made the mistake of running and becoming airborn. Luckily no broken bones or camera. Lesson learned - "Running down a mountain is to be avoided for non athletic folks".

SmugMug > popular today > 01/07/10 - Blaze
Well, her name is Blaze, but we call her Blazie. She's a shelter rescue. I was at Petsmart one day for a foster puppy adoption event, and Blaze was one of the other dogs that the shelter brought along in search of a home. To clarify, I fostered about 80 puppies through my yard/house in an 18 month period right before Joey was born through the SPCA of Wake County. Anyway... Blaze had been at the shelter for over a month...not good. She was so afraid of everyone she'd hide at the back of her kennel instead of rushing to the front to try to greet you. I'd already spent some time in her kennel with her quietly loving on her, so we were aquainted. She spent most of the day at Petsmart just petried and trying to hide in one of those fold-up captain's chairs. At the end of the day, foster puppies adopted, I asked if I could bring her home and try to work with her over the weekend and then bring her back. Give her a vacation from the shelter. "Sure." It was obvious after I got her home that she was a mess as far as adopting to a regular family. Basically, afraid of her own shadow. Terrified of men (no clue why). No way was a 2-day weekend pass going to 'fix' her. Sooooooooooo 10 years later...well she's my best doggie friend. Loves the boys but will go hide when they start in on their antics. No longer afraid of her shadow will meet strangers at the door to check them out. Does not chase cats or squirrels, but if you're another dog in the street you'd better watch out. That is of course unless you're Jake the roaming farm dog. She just adores him.

She does two tricks...she sits and she'll shake your hand for a dog biscuit. Other than that, she'll drag you on the leash for the right reason and she spends most of her day sleeping on the guest bed or couch.

She's very camera shy, and I've tried several times in the last month to get a good portrait. This is OK but still not what I envision. She has the cutest 1 up 1 down ears if I can get her to perk them. Inside shots are easier, but I really need natural light to show off her fur. I'll keep trying. She is a family member after all and thus subject to getting her picture taken at any time.

I was working until midnight. What I shot last night inbetween computer jobs just wasn't doing it for me. This is from a couple of days ago.

I did find my notes on the homestead. They said Stan the hunter said it was the old David Jones homestead. Not as much info as I'd hoped. Do note the chimney on the backside and the regular looking front door. I can't explain why there aren't more windows.

HAGD,
Maryann
